St.
Angela’s College Achievements 2005/2006
As
always there is a great buzz around the school
as students support many fundraising efforts.
There is a huge amount of goodwill in the school
community and an awarenessof the fact that our
help is required to make life a little more
comfortable or bearable for those who are not
as privileged as we are, both at home and in
distant parts of the Third World.
Our
Head Girl, Denise Duffy, has shown leadership
and initiative in her various fundraising attempts.
She hopes to travel to Estonia next Summer and
will personally see to it that the money she
has raised throughout the year is put to good
use.
A
cheque for €2000
was donated to the Red Cross by a group of prefects
representing all classes. This was the money
raised for disaster relief in Kashmir/Pakistan
on the occasion of the Rebel Treble Red and
White Day last November.

Our
Fourth Year and Fifth Year girls took part in the
annual collection last December and promoted a CD
with the Manning Brothers in aid of SHARE. Our annual
Christmas Raffle was extremely successful and the
monies raised were dispersed to needy families known
to the school and to a variety of local charities
including Cork Simon, St Vincent de Paul Society,
the Sick Poor Society and other worthy organisations.
On
Valentine’s Day, the girls wore their ‘hearts on their
sleeves’ and dressed in pink in aid of The Marie Keating
Foundation.
The
24 Hour Fast for Trocaire was well supported and students
raised enough sponsorship to provide eight people
with thirty hours of literacy training in a third
world where there are 87 million illiterate adults.
Cake
Sales, Hamper Raffles and Quizzes the list is endless
as St. Angela’s girls continue to show their spirit
of giving, generosity and love.
2005
was a year of great individual and school achievements
and our first months of 2006 have proved just as successful.
“The
only place where successful comes before work is the
dictionary”!
Two
of our most successful senior debating students Karen
Concannon and Rioghnach O’ Leary were selected to
debate at international European Youth Parliament
Conferences. Karen had a very exciting and successful
trip to Bali in Italy, last November. Rioghnach will
be leaving for Paris on the 24th of March to represent
St. Angelas’. It is a great distinction for the girls
to be chosen for this prestigious
international event and a great honour for the school.
The
European Youth Parliament Munster Regional Conference
competition took place in St. Angelas in February
which saw our student’s progress to the National stage.
St.Angelas’
girls have been showing their sporting prowess in
all fields. They continue to prove to be supportive
opponents in Hockey, Basketball, Table-tennis and
in other areas such as Athletics, Horse-riding, Irish-dancing
and many more.
Also
many congratulations to Karen Hayes our Sixth Year
student who came first, for her Solo-Singing in Feis
Maitiu, for her third year running!!!
Notable
Scholars - Congratulations to Emer O’Connell and Mai
Twomey who have been invited to intend the UCC Enrichment
classes in Mathematics as a result ofthe exceptionally
high results they achieved in Mathematics in their
Junior Certificate examination.
Past
pupils Susan Spillane, Muireann Dennehy and Hannah
Murphy continue to carry St.Angela’s light.
Susan
was presented with an award at the beginning of March
for her exemplary results in Applied Maths in last
years Leaving Cert Exams. Susan achieved a spectacular
nine A1s in her Leaving Certificate.
Muireann
and Hannah both won ‘FULLBRIGHT’ Scholarships which
will allow them to study abroad in an Ivy League College.
The
dedication of the Mary Ryan Room,by our Chaplain,
Fr. Christy O’ Shaughnessy took place last October.
The room was presented to the school by the Parent’s
Association in the memory of the very first student
to cross the threshold in St. Angela’s in 1887 and
who later went on to become the first female professor
in the British Isles.
This
year St. Angela’s said a fond and sad farewell to
three of its long standing and dedicated staff members.
Sr. Elizabeth Bradley and Ms. Kay Joyce retired in
June 2004. This January Ms. Brid O’ Connor from our
Science Dept. retired, to whom we wish her all the
best.
Next
year our Acting Principal for the year Ms. Geraldine
Quilter and Acting Deputy Principal Ms .Pauline Honohan
will return the helm of St. Angela’s to Ms .Rosalie
Moloney. Ms. Quilter and Ms. Honohan are doing an
amazing job in continuing to guide our school.
